Welcome to The Double Rafter Ranch
"Where Time Creates Quality"
Hello, and welcome to the Double Rafter Ranch commercial and project animals webpage. Our names are Jim and Stephanie Barrie. We live in Lincoln California in the foothills on a small Gentlemans Ranch of what is left of the original Barrie Family Ranch. My husband has been here his entire life and he has managed and raised cattle his entire life as well. We are fairly new to the club calf and project cattle world and we felt that our prices needed to reflect that.
We feel that the 4-H and FFA kids need to be able to make some money on their animals for all the hard work that goes into raising a steer or heifer. You don’t always have to be a Grand Champion. Though that’s always nice, but to learn how to properly raise a steer or heifer, know what and how to feed them, know how much it takes to “finish” them out and get them to fair, is what it's all about. If the kids can place in the line up and make some good money as well, then it’s a win-win situation. We have priced our calves with that in mind.
We are seniors and have a small herd of cows that we A.I. each year. This will be our 4th year now and it has kept us physically fit and there is always something to do around the ranch. We halter break, teach our calves to tie and lead, desensitize them as much as we can to noise, dogs, quads, baths, and blow drying and anything else we can do for them so they are gentle when they leave here for their new homes for the younger 4-Her or the older FFAers. They have their first set of shots and have been wormed, bathed and blow dried at least once. They lead and tie well and can be led on foot or by quad. All of them have been on grain for 60 days. We only have 10 calves available each year, and it's been great to have return customers this year.
Our goal is to be able to offer non-terminal heifers for others to raise their own project animals. We have done well with our steers though and are selling both steers and heifers at this time. Our cows are a cross of Maine Anjou, Shorthorn and Angus. This year we A.I.ed to Angus bulls and it has increased the muscling, lengthened necks, given them all beautiful heads, toplines and improved the whole calf crop.
We hope that you will stop by and see if our animals can fit your needs. Have a cup of coffee and enjoy the scenery. Were always glad to have company. This year's calf crop came in March. Our calves are weaned and ready to go now for your June, July, August and September fairs. Next year's calf crop will arrive in March as well. We will keep you informed with pictures as they arrive and you can call anytime.Sincerely,
Jim and Stephanie L. Barrie
